The Midnight Departure
When Wayan, my driver, came to pick me up from my hotel in Seminyak in the wee hours of a Sunday morning at 01:30 AM, he literally had to navigate through the sea of partygoers celebrating in style. The contrast could not have been starker: stepping out from the neon buzz of Seminyak into a silent pre-dawn journey towards the sacred volcanic heart of Bali.
Wayan was engaging and, as we drove through the dark highlands, enlightened me on the many facets of Balinese history and culture. We reached the base camp of Mount Batur at approximately 2:45 AM, where I was warmly greeted by my mountain guide, Tri — an extraordinarily fit 50-year-old local woman whose petite frame concealed the endurance of an athlete.
The Ascent in the Dark
Our climb started promptly at 3:00 AM in absolute pitch darkness, punctuated only by the steady beam of our head torches and the quiet murmurs of fellow hikers making their way up the caldera. The trail was strewn with volcanic rubble, basalt rocks, and loose ash. In several narrow sections, a single misstep on the steep incline could lead to trouble — but Tri’s expert navigation kept our footing rock solid.

While I felt the strain of steep ascents, Tri never displayed a moment of fatigue — a true mountain veteran. When the incline sharpened and fatigue set in, Tri provided the perfect antidote with encouraging words and steady pacing.

We reached the crater rim at 5:30 AM, well before the sun crested the horizon. I settled on a volcanic rock to catch my breath and rest weary legs. A simple, deeply satisfying breakfast of freshly boiled eggs, warm sandwiches, sweet bananas, and hot Balinese coffee recharged our spirits as the sky began its show.
At 06:00 AM, the Balinese sun broke through the cloud deck in a kaleidoscope of gold, amber, and crimson. Standing above a sea of clouds overlooking Lake Batur and the distant silhouette of Mount Rinjani on Lombok was deeply humbling. The entire assembly of trekkers fell silent in awe before breaking into spontaneous applause.
The Descent & An Unexpected Ride
None of us wanted to leave Nature's embrace, but we began our descent along the ridge. Halfway down the gravel slope, I met a local rider on a trail motorcycle who kindly offered me a ride down the lower slopes — hurtling down the volcanic incline with adrenaline pumping before meeting Wayan back at base camp.
